A self-described parody Twitter account of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted a tweet on Feb. 19 advocating on behalf of an Alabama woman who left the country to join ISIS — and is now attempting to return to the United States.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo havesaid the woman — Hoda Muthana, 24 — is not welcome back in the country.

PRESS RELEASE: We must block Trump from stopping the return of the heroic Alabama mother from ISIS. In many ways she is more of a hero then our veterans. Welcome home sister!” reads the parody tweet from @AOCpress, whose profile is named “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Press Release (parody).”

Despite that label, the satirical intent was not clear to some on the platform, as evidenced by comments of shock and apparent outrage in the thread that followed. One user, for example, replied: “No, sister you should be going over there with her where you belong not in our Congress!”

A screenshot of the made-up tweet has since gained traction on Facebook, too, where it has been repeatedlyposted with no indication that the account was not actually Ocasio-Cortez’s. The screenshot does not display the part of the profile name that indicates it is parody, nor does it show the account’s biography, which calls the content “Political Satire.”

On Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “All In,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she is “extraordinarily encouraged” by President Joe Biden’s executive orders on climate change and that the orders show “a good-faith openness and relationship” to activists by Biden.

Ocasio-Cortez said, “I’m feeling extraordinarily encouraged. And I think that the significance of President Biden’s executive orders communicates a lot. One is that it really communicates that he meant what he said on the campaign trail, that he would make climate change a central priority of his administration, and that he considers it, not just a national security threat, but frankly, the global matter that it is. But it also really signifies a good-faith openness and relationship to those activist communities that you had mentioned, these grassroots communities and organizations, on the ground workers, etc., scientists, saying, we are not going to be resistant to grassroots movements, but we are going to collaborate and work with grassroots movements all across the United States to make sure that we are creating as many jobs and as much justice as possible as we fight to save our planet.”
